Greenwood Grove Students Dig Deep for Schools Tree Day
More than 20 students from Cooroy State School got their hands dirty planting hundreds of native trees at Peet Limited’s Greenwood Grove community on Friday 29 July 2011.
The event was Schools Tree Day, part of National Tree Day – Australia’s biggest community tree planting initiative which is celebrated at the end of July each year.
Taking their learning outside the classroom, students planted a series of lomandras near a creek at Greenwood Grove under the careful guidance of Greening Australia.
Greening Australia Supervisor Charmian Murdoch said a total of 300 lomandras were planted by the children on the day.
“We chose lomandras which are a grass like plant because they help to stop erosion of the creek bed and improve the water quality,” Ms Murdoch said.
“Aside from chatting to the children about the importance of choosing vegetation that suits an area, we also showed them how to plant below ground level so when it rains this will create a basin to catch and store the water for the plants,” she said.
The native trees planted by the students will also provide habitat and food for the local fauna and enhance the environment for residents of Greenwood Grove.
Peet Limited Managing Director and CEO Brendan Gore said Peet was pleased to support National Tree Day and Schools Tree Day by providing plants for the planting day.
“This is a great event and it gives the community and young people in particular, a chance to roll up their sleeves and make a real contribution to the natural environment – and their own urban environment,” Mr Gore said.
Cooroy State School Teacher Phil Giblett said the students had really enjoyed getting out of the classroom to help.
“It was a great way for students to learn about the importance of looking after their environment and also gain an understanding that they are part of a larger community,” Mr Giblett said.
“The planting also gave students a sense of gratification that they had helped make the estate look much nicer and they are looking forward to seeing their plants grow.”
Greenwood Grove is a vibrant community set amongst beautiful parklands and waterways just 15 minutes from the beaches and boutique shopping of Noosa.
In addition to its sought-after location, Greenwood Grove offers a variety of generously sized home sites which are proving increasingly popular with buyers.
